Giveaway Day - The De-Tealing Details

Is it just me, or does everyone else also seem to watch their stashes evolve from heavy on the purple to pink to green to blue to yellow and back again? I'm guessing no. It's the nature of the fabric industry telling us what is hot hot hot, our own personal tastes, and in my case, how much storage space I have in any particular bin at a given time. Because if I am going to rearrange and refold, it better be for a darn good reason.

I do love a good teal fabric. I will likely always love a good teal fabric. But my stash is currently a bit teal heavy, so what better way to purge a few than to take part in Giveaway Day over at Sew Mama Sew!

Up for giveaway are five 1/3 cuts of some pretty teal-reading fabrics. Meaning that in my stash organization, they would be filed under teal. Your interpretation may differ. I will not be in your studio watching you put them away and harumphing behind your back should you decide they go in the greens, so file them wherever you please. (Note: You may find the word "organization" in relation to "my stash" can be interpreted quite loosely.)

Teal, lime, whatever. It's all good.
I just find them pretty. Hopefully you do as well. And no worries - I'll still have some of each of these for myself, so the idea of this giveaway helping me to purge my teals is really just all talk.

Also included in the giveaway - a copy of my best selling "Kickin' Stash" pattern.

HA! You thought you knew what photo would be here! Fooled you! A version that didn't make the cut due to white lines all over it. But still pretty.

You'll want to use more fabrics than just these in your quilt when you make it up, and you'll want to make it up because it is a fantastic block and pattern, but these will give you a nice start. See, I even mocked a block up, using the "planned scrappy" version, so you could see.

I'm nothing if not helpful.
The winner will be chosen Sunday December 15 at noon. Ish. So entries are open all week long!

Giveaway "Day" is not aptly named. But it is all to our benefit.

But Wait! There is more! For the length of Giveaway Day, ie until Sunday noonish, I have lowered the price of Kickin' Stash on Craftsy to $6.00! 33% off! Why? I have no idea. I guess because I felt like it. You just never know what I might do next, do you?

Well, let me tell you what I might do next. I also lowered the price of "Taking Names" on Craftsy because what is Kickin' Stash without Taking Names? Not much of a schoolyard brawl, that's for sure.

Should you be my winner and should you have bought KS this week, your $6.00 will be refunded in it's entirety.

 How to enter:

  • Leave a comment below telling me a little bit about the worst quilt you ever made. I'm currently working on one that might qualify for me, so make me feel better.
  • For an extra entry, become a follower or let me know that you follow QHH some way or another.
  • For a third entry, head on over to my EPQD facebook page and see if it is a community you would like to join to snark it up and share fun quilt stories. If so, become a member there too! Then let me know you did.
When you are done entering my giveaway, be sure to head on back to Sew Mama Sew and enter some more - so many great things being just given away, because we bloggers are just awesome.

Good luck!

Ok so I make a lot of quilts I am not happy with that other people like but I guess I see things they don't. The worst of all time was my first I didn't even know how to use a sewing machine properly I didn't let the fabric feed thru I pulled it thru what a mess it was in pieces after the second washing

The worst quilt I ever made was probably my first. I used a weird yellow fabric that frayed like crazy when washed. All that work washed away with one washing.

I've only quilted one thing, a table runner. I made many mistakes, so I'm hoping it will be my worst quilt ever!
Thanks for the chance.

Worst Quilt/Best Quilt When I was 10 in 1962, I decided to make a quilt. I asked all the neighbor ladies for scrap fabric and with the help of my mom I hand pieced enough 9 patch blocks to make a quilt. My dad built a quilt frame and the whole family got involved. My dad and both older brother helped my mom and me do the quilting. Lots of pricked fingers but we got it done and I still have it today. It is a well loved memory of my first sewing project. Thanks, Kathy

I'm still working on the worst one. It is a queen size ocean waves with a zillion billion teensy triangles. I work on it, get 10 blocks, work on it a year later, put it away. Maybe this year I'll finish.

I made a quilt using red and blue in the log cabin type block. One side was re/blue and the other whites. There was too much white on it and it looked horrible!

Diana @ Red Delicious Life said...

My worst quilting project would have to be my first table runner. It was just a pack of charms all pieced together and bound. What made it a train-wreck was the type of batting I used. I didn't know any better and I got this high loft polyester stuff. It seemed to work okay at first but after about a month my husband asked if one of the cats was laying on it because there was fur all over it. I told him "No, honey, that's what is referred to as bearding in the quilting world." Oh well, live and learn!

The worst one I made was actually a set of quilted placemats. I pieced 4 and hand quilted 1 and a half then put them away for maybe 6 or 7 years. I pulled them out last year and made the brave decision to toss 3 and put a bright pink binding on the quilted one. It is wonky in all the wrong ways but my daughter thinks it makes an excellent doll quilt.

The simply woven quilt pattern on moda bake shop. I adore the fabroc and the pattern but couldn't get a freaking single one of the blocks to measure up to a 12 1/2" square. Every single one was wonky. And I even went out and purchased a 1/4" foot to ensure my seam allowance wasn't the issue. No clue what was awry, but I ended up havi g to measure every single piece and draw 1/4" lines as I pieced together block - then do the same with every block! Took forever!

My sister and I married brothers. Our dear mother in law wanted us both to know what it took to make quilts. We sewed clothes not quilts. She enrolled us all in a class. My sister and I decided to see who could finish first! Speed was the name of the game. Poor Jean, she tore my sisters apart it was so bad, and I salvaged mine to a pillow in our first apartment. You would never believe the quilts we have both made sense. We made her proud eventually!!!

I think that my first quilt was the worst. I had seen a pattern in one of the women's magazines and so I decided to make it...king size! This was about 28 years ago, before rotary cutters and mats, before strip piecing, before Eleanor Burns and her Quilt in a Day books! The pattern was Trip Around the World, done in 4" squares...drawn and cut by hand. The actual quilt was fantastic but it wasn't the best experience!

There are some projects that I really don't want to think about. You probably aren't old enough to remember the wild colors of the long shorts that boys wore in the seventies. It never made it past quilt top.. it was unbelievably ugly.

My worst quilt was definitely my first. I wanted something that I could carry around and sew by hand. Well none of my blocks were square. It was a nightmare.

Linda V said...

My worst quilt was my very first quilt, which also makes it one of the best. I am self taught and had NO instructions. I just drew from cardboard a small square and cut out hundreds of squares from scraps. I sewed them together in strips and sewed the strips together. There was NO matching corners. Never thought about it. Used all kinds of fabrics too. Cottons, polyesters, flannels. But you know what? As ugly as the thing was, the recipient was my 5 year old daughter and she slept with that thing every night and even took it with her to college. I laugh when I think about it.

Anonymous said...

My worst quilt is one I'll never finish - it was a fabric origami one that I decided to make lap quilt sized, but didn't think "hey, this origami has a bunch of raw edges that will shred to nothing if I stick it in the washing machine". Which isn't actually the worst thing about it, that might be the atrocious quilting or possibly the fact that one of the borders was somehow so much too large that when I was quilting it, I had a solid couple inches to FOLD over, stitch down, and pretend was an existing seam in the border. Ugh. If I could, I would burn it in the back yard. As it stands, I haven't figured out quite how to get rid of it.

You make really warm qults and I want one with a Moose cause that is my favorite animal, and I want the glow in the dark stars like the quilt you made me when I was little." He is now nine. Who could say no to that! The problems making the quilt are just little bumps in the road!

HI there,

Thanks for the chance to win that gorgeous fabric! My worse quilt was made with bright purple and pink fabric. I gave it to a Japenese friend and she loved it. Who would have known? Have a Merry Christmas!

What a good question for a giveaway! Although it could bring up some bad memories. There was the Quiltastrophe, which was a split 9 patch that was fine until I washed it and the maroon fabric bled. And then I tried to fix it with some kind of bleed-removing chemical and all the OTHER reds turned oranges. Disaster. But as far as one I actually made that just didn't work out as planned, there was the "ugly quilt" :) http://katandcatquilts.blogspot.com/2011/08/finish-ugly-quilt.html Thanks!

What a fun question! The worst quilt I ever made was made out of old polyester fabric that I got at a rummage sale. I couldn't afford to buy quilting cotton, this fabric looked ok, and I thought, "What the heck?" Bad idea. It just doesn't quilt up nice. Thanks for your great giveaway. I'm going to be contemplating the difference betwwe green and teal for awhile.

Hmm. Right now I'm disliking my current quilt. It's just not behaving.

But, in terms of design, color and "not living up to expectations, my worst-worst quilt might happen to be one of the early ones, I didn't use cottons and so the fabric sagged and pilled and wasn't soft and nice after only a short while... I've since ditched it. I mean really. I threw it out in a dumpster... there was no way to save it.

(I knew you'd be proud.)

None of my worst quilts ever get finished. Eventually I wise up and toss it out before I waste any more quilting time or fabric. My worst ever was supposed to be a mosaic quilt and I used faux suede as the backing so it could have a grout texture, but faux suede is really stretchy so I had to wonder under muslin to the back. Then I drew the picture on with a washout pen and fused little bits of fabric down. On the top part of the fabric tiles I used a lighter thread to appliqué and a darker thread on the bottom so it could have a light source. Do you know how long it takes to appliqué itty bitty pieces of fabric with 2 different threads each! It was as stiff as a carpet besides. When a humid spell erased my drawing before it's time I threw in the towel. You have to know when a project can be salvaged and when enough is enough. :)

If a quilt falls into my yuck category, then it is perfect to practice FMQ on and then maybe donate it (to the blind?). That way, all is not lost!

My worst quilt ever is a "rag" style one I made using leftover home dec fabric. Ummm yeah, it was stiff. But my friend liked it so I was happy to give it to her.

Since I'm a new quilter, having finished only 3 quilts so far...3 more in progress...I'm not ready to qualify any of them as the "worst" quilt yet. just happy to be quilting!

I did a hoffman challenge quilt with a woman's head, it was rejected, I think her head was way too big.

I don't have any "worst" quilts! It would've been my first one, but I unpicked it all and redid it. :P

I haven't ever made a quilt, so I don't have a worst one. But I do make quilt tops for my group World of Charity Stitching.
Thanks,

1) My very first 'worst' quilt was when I 9 yrs old learning to hand quilt with my grandmother. My grandfather built two quilting frames; adult size for grandmother and a child size for me. I made a 'cuddle' quilt simply made with a top, mountain mist batting and muslin back. I penciled my drawing to hand quilt the design and had quilted the whole quilt all by myself. I was SO proud! After hand binding it, it was time to wash it...and lo and behold, we found the missing pins we were looking for ~ the pins were protruding out of the quilt like a porcupine!!!

2) I followed you on Jen Eskridge page on Facebook and...

3) ...now I am a follower on your page too!

Thank you for this opportunity to win your giveaway!

I made a wall hanging which went quite well until it came to the quilting. I had just bought a new Bernina and was eager to try out the BSR. The BSR took over. Result: the stippling got out of hand - spikey, crossing lines, tight bits, broken threads, loose bits, UNeven stitches - in a word: ugly. What happened to the stitch REGULATOR?
Why, whenever I see it, do I think of Charlie Chaplin's "Modern Times"?

I have only been quilting for a couple of years so I am not sure I have a "worst quilt". I love all of them...just as a mother loves an ugly child. To me they are all beautiful..

my first quilt made with poly cotton blends from the j-store and quilt in a day log cabin, but i misread the instructions and tore the strips for the whole quilt. a neighbor was just starting to long arm and somehow tore a hole in the backing. it frayed to death with the first wash! my husband still takes it camping though
