It's the little things. Literally. I apologize for how this photo is so small. |
Welcome to everyone stopping by: if you've been here before, you know I can be a little wacky, and if you are new, my opening paragraph wackadoo-ness is pretty much what you find around here. I love designing, sharing, opining, and being a part of the Quiltmaker community and I'd love to have you stop by now and then. Mostly I'm thrilled you are here right now so let's get on with block stats:
Name: Sun Shower
Number: 1006
Piecing Method: Machine Applique (don't panic! It's fun! It's easy!)
Star Sign: Scorpio
Likes: Polka dots, fancy decorative stitches, long walks on the beach
Hopes and dreams: To be a part of a quilt you create for someone you love, up to and including yourself.
Fabrics used: Art Gallery Fabrics Oval Elements and Chromatics (stick around here enough and you'll learn I'm a bit addicted to AGF.)
Here it is in all its glory right in the magazine. I'm pretty sure Quiltmaker must use a better camera than the one on my iphone; their photos always look so yum.
It's really a fun little block and a great intro to machine applique. The shapes are simple (and found on pattern sheet 1 of the issue), can be cut from scraps (yay! scraps are my other obsession), and have a cool little geometric look to them. The key to getting those corners right, as you will see in the issue, is cutting the background larger than 12.5" and then trimming down. It's really the only trick to the block, and I think we can all agree that that is hardly a tricky trick.
I'm hoping you also got to see the runner I created in the gallery on today's Quilty Pleasures post.
Look at the cuteness. You too can do this! |
Perhaps you notice something is missing. Yes. I, creator of the block, screwed up and forgot the little edge pieces in the corners when I made the thing. We could call it Creative License, but let's be honest. The real term this time is Abject Airheadedness. So we all must pretend they are there.
In any case, I figured a runner using three blocks could be cute. So I pulled some fabrics...
Hmm. More AGFs. Shocking! |
Sewed some strips together.......
No measurements, no problem. |
Would it have been more fun with the corner pieces? Probably. But too late! |
So time for the giveaways. That's right. GiveawayS! Woo hoo!
Giveaway #1 - Copy of the magazine from Quiltmaker and a $25 Gift Certificate from my lovely blog sponsor, Gotcha Covered Quilting. She's an online shop so you don't even have to get dressed to spend your winnings, and you'll definitely find something you love because she has the most fabulous taste in fabrics!
Giveaway #2 - Copy of the magazine from me, along with a Harlequin Shake pattern (because it's new and awesome) and a Kona solids charm pack to get you started on making the quilt.
Charm pack is solid brights in all shades of the rainbow |
To enter the giveaway, tell me who your doppelganger is in the comment section. This was always a fun question for my guests when I did the Hottie Hotseat interviews, so why not. At any point in your life, who have you been told you look like? Everyone seems to have someone! If there is a funny story to share (Did you get a good table at a hot restaurant because the hostess thought you were Angelina Jolie? Did someone ask you for your autograph in an airport because they mistook you for Tula Pink?) then share it! Also acceptable are stories of you acting like a dork in front of a famous quilting personality, because those could be fun too. Such as the time I practically forced myself upon Rob Appell as he walked by my booth at market and attached a Quilting Hottie button to him. But that's just me. Either way, we'll have a lovely list of entertaining stories I am sure.
For a second chance at the giveaways, head on over to my EPQD facebook page and leave a comment in the pinned post at the top letting me know you are a member of my community there, whether you have been for a long time or just joined today.
Thanks for stopping by, and I hope to see you again soon!

Congratulations on making the cover! I can't wait to get my hands on a copy and see just which blocks I'll be making for a sampler. Love the colors you picked for your runner and think I might have to turn your block into a wall hanging. When I was younger I was told I looked like Audrey Hepburn but as I've aged I think it's more like a skinny Penny Marshall.
Congratulations, very exciting. I guess I don't look like anyone but me.
Rachael Leigh Cook. No I don't think so either. My husband regularly gets comments in the street about looking like Simon Pegg though.
I love the colors you've chosen. I don't think I have a doppelganger--I'm uniquely me!
Congratulations! Nobody ever told me I looked like anybody else but myself.
I'm no fun. I don't have a doppleganger, that I have found yet anyway.
No doppelganger here, but I once road in an elevator with Angela Walters and was so dumbstruck that all I could say was "I can't remember your name but you're that quilter who learned from her grandfather." I felt really stupid!
Lovely colour combination in your table runner.
I look like my paternal grandmother! Not really a doppelgänger unless we're time travellers, but I once arrived at work and in my sleepy state saw my own reflection in the glass door and thought, "What's Grandma doing here?"! As she passed away more than 40 years ago, it was quite a shock.
Congrats, cover girl! No doppelganger or quilting celebrity sightings here. I'm still surprised this was your block. Add that to your list of attributes: unpredictable. Thanks for the chance!
No famous doppelganger or celebrity quilty stories, funny or not. You fooled us all with this block. I really figured you would do something curvy.
Congratulations. Love your block. I don't know of a doppelganger of mine.
I don't remember the name of the celeb someone told me I looked like. Thanks for sharing.
I was once told I looked like Mariel Hemmingway--but just once! I'm more often mistaken for an old friend.....
Congrats on making the cover! Your block is adorable! The only person I've been told that I look like is my mom. Thanks for a chance to win one of the give-aways.
A classmate told me in high school my nose looked like Bob Hope's!!! and a boy friend one said I looked like Faye Dunaway.. of course you know the one I preferred. The children of a coworker thought I was Barbara Madrell.... funny funny... love your block.. thanks for the trip down memory lane.. hadn't thought of this for a while..
No doppleganger for me, but my husband is constantly told he looks like Sam Elliot, now if he only had that voice :)
I have been told I look familiar but not celeb name mentioned. I think I am one of a kind.
Congratulations--on block and cover--double celebration!!
The only person I've ever been confused with is my little sister--go figure.
jebonf(at)yahoo.com
I don't look like anyone, except my aunt, luckily for all the others in the world. Congrats on the new pattern in 100 Blocks
I was in a store once and a lady kept staring at me and following me. Then she finally came up and asked me if I was Gwyneth Paltrow, no idea why.
Debbie
I look like nobody famous - just my mom, and my daughter, and granddaughter.
Congratulations Cover Girl, much deserved
I have no idea. I have been told that I look like my mother... And rarely, my dad. Nobody famous!
No one ever mistakes me for anyone important or famous. That's fine with me.
My husband thinks I look like Brenda Carlisle of The Go-Go's. I think he's crazy, but we both agree I can't sing, so that's something. :-) Congrats on getting in the magazine again) and thanks for sponsoring the giveaway.
I was a dork when I took a class with Darlene Zimmerman (Feedsack lady). I asked to take a picture with her AND sign my book. ;) Love you block! Congratulations getting in the magazine!!
I have a doppelganger - my twin sister!
Love your block too!
I liked the block right away. Now that I've seen the tablerunner, I love it!
Note to Joe and the girls...Mother's Day is Sunday, and Mama needs a new cutting mat. ;)
"They" say my sister and I look alike....except she's blond and I'm brown, she's short and I'm tall...but we look alike?????
Love your block, so cheerful! Oh boy, do I have a lot of fabric scraps your block will work great with! Woo-hoo! Ya know, that has never happened to me - someone saying "you look like so-and-so". Just more proof I'm unique aka freak. :-)
I have been mistaken for my mother. Fortunately she always looked younger than her age.
Congrats on your cover-girl status. I was once told that I looked like Shelly Hack from the TV show Charlie's Angels, but I was also told that the Bride of Chucky looked like me. I think it was the hair!
Yeah! A cover girl! My mom. Everyone tells me I look just like she did. Last year at Stitchin Heaven in Texas I took classes from Bonnie Hunter. The day before classes were to start I was setting up machine when she walked in the door. I was dumbstruck. Couldn't say a word. She is a wonderful person and just started talking to me. poladydwd(at)yahoo(dot)com
Congratulations on making the cover! Great block. Love the table runner. I have never been mistaken for someone famous, but several times I have been approached by strangers who have mistaken me for a friend or relative. Thanks for the fantastic giveaway!
No famous doppelgänger here but everytime i look in the mirror I wonder why my mother is looking back at me. Love your block and your colors.
I have never been told that I look like someone else.
I don't look like anyone famous, but there is another person in town that people sometimes confuse with me. We are both close to 5", dark hair going grey, and do a lot of walking wearing a baseball hat. The grands and my son call her the Mini-Me or the Other-Me, but I'd much rather look like Angelina Jolie...
Ma from Mom and Pa Kettle...:))
What a cute block! I have never been told that I look like any one famous (or not). Thanks!
Please click on the delaineelliott above for my email link.
Congrats on making the cover! I love your block and since I'm addicted to table runners right now - that will be up next on my list!!! Doppelganger, hmmm - my mother in law always thought I looked like Marlo Thomas - and you probably don't even know who she is (she had a show called "That Girl" in the late 60s early 70s)!!! Thanks so much for the chance to win :)

Congratulations, I love your block, reminds me of sunflowers.
No funny story, several say i look like Diane Keaton .
I can't think of anyone thinking I look like some one famous. I'm just me I guess! Lol
bgbailey81@gmail.com
I always wanted my doppelganger to be Candace Bergen (when young, at least our hair color was similar). She's still a fascinating woman. There was a fellow student in high school who people said looked like me. I never saw it. Actually my daughter and I are pretty close lookalikes.
Glad to see your block and had so much fun reading about it. Looking forward to magazine so I can make it, but I need your background fabric.
No Doppelganger yet but I have been told I looked like someone's friend.
This block does look like a good one to attempt machine applique with--just what I need. When I was in college ('60's), I was told I looked like Mrs. John Glenn.
I have never seen anyone that looks like me. But when I go places lots of people seem to think they know me (they don't) so apparently I look like EVERYONE. At my husband's 10 year high school reunion I didn't know a soul but everyone kept saying "I know your face, but I can't think of your name". Um, no. They didn't recognize my husband. It was a big class, that must be it.
No, famous doppelganger. 24Tangent@gmail.com
What fun and I learned a new word! Doppleganger, what a unique word. Glad that you gave a definition as I would have had to look that one up. I guess I look like my cousin, Barbara. She got that name because she was born before I was. But somehow if someone can't remember my name, that is what they say, "Barbara" Perhaps it was suppose to be mine too. Love your block. Thanks for sharing.
No Doppleganger. But, I did act a fool when meeting Eleanor Burns many, many years ago, when I first started quilting. I asked her if she cleaned up all her thrown over the shoulder scraps by herself or if she had staff that did that for her! See what I mean by acting a fool?!
I guess me, I've never been told I look like someone else.
Congrats getting on the cover!!! I haven't been told I look like anyone famous, but quite often I have someone ask me if I was at a party such and such a night, or if I know so and so. I must have a common face. I know it wasn't me, because I live a very dull life!! lol
I got a kick out of reading your comments. What a great question! I've never been told I look like anybody famous. But when I look in the mirror in the morning, I see Albert Einstein. By the end of the day I try to work myself up to a passable Jennifer Aniston. LOL!
I've been told I look like my aunt. not sure it's true.
I love your block, I really want to try it. I must have a common look, because I've been told I look like a lot of people. But the person I know who looks most like me is my oldest daughter.
There has been several times that someone walked up to me and called me by some other name. The only famous person was Sarah Palin.
I have never been told I look like anyone else so no stories about a doppleganger. Great table runner
When I moved to a small town, people kept asking me how my parents were. How do you nicely say, "they're great but you don't know them"? I finally found out who they thought I was
I have been told I look like Winona Ryder when she was in Edward Scissorhands. I used to have a client that called me Winona...to this day I still don't think he ever actually new my real name! :)
Cute Block! I love it! In college I was told that I looked like a girl on a poster. I could kind of see it and it was very flattering to be told this. cknapp3626@sbcglobal.net
Congrats, covergirl! When I was in my 20s and 30s, people would often say I reminded them of someone, but I don't think I ever reminded them of anyone famous. Sorry this wasn't a funner (is that a word?) story.
Your tablerunner is awesome!
Your table runner with your block is cool--don't think I have a doppelganger--haven't met them yet anyway!
No one has ever said I look like anyone famous. But I usually can't get out of the grocery store without someone coming up to ask where they can find a product & I often get stopped on the street for directions. So maybe I look like someone's favorite generic aunt or teacher. Thanks.
I am always being called "Karla", yes this is my mothers name. We are only 18 years apart and as the years have passed she has dealt with them better than I! So whenever one of the even older ladies from church call me "Karla" I answer some things are not worth bothering over.LOL
When I was younger, many people told me I looked like Carol Burnett. Love your block.
My uncle, who has no tact told me I looked like Barbara Streisand. The only similarity between me and Babs is our noses. Thanks Uncle Andy!
I really like the table runner with the stripey parts between your blocks. I will have to try that myself.
I don't really have a doppelganger, although people would say my sister, Mother, and I looked very much alike.
Hey - you're "dotty" just like me! I've got lots of scrappy dots left over from my last quilting project and now I know how I'm going to "get rid of them". I've been mistaken for that brunette that was on "Northern Nights". Can't remember her name, but I was flattered!
My daughter says I look like Kathy Bates. Don't quite know what to take from that!
1, Congrats on being a cover girl!
2. My double was Barbara Hershey!
3. At my mother in laws death bed, the dr. asked if I was her.
4. I don't look like her anymore.
5. I look like her grandmother!
I like all the ways you have used your block. My doppelgänger is my cousin Sherri.
It is wonderful that your block is on the cover... and the tablerunner is cute.
I must say that the kindergarten students in my classroom thought I was their bus driver...now wouldn't that be something?
Congrats on being a cover girl! I just look like me.
OK...ahem, in my teens I was sent a picture of Olivia Hussey as Juliet in Franco Zeffirelli's Romeo & Juliet! Sender swore it was me.
In a more recent decade I was told I looked like Anne Rice (15 yrs ago).
I only wish.
Your block and runner are adorable!
congrats on being published. your block is so fun. love your table runner. since I was in high school I have been told I look and sound like my mother. woohoo, cant think of a better person to look and sound like.
So, I get comments a few times a year that I look like someone...but I've never heard any good stories. I always ask if my doppelganger is a nice person, and so far I haven't found an evil twin. I don't know if I should be happy or disappointed.
I must look like a lot of people because everyone tells me they have met my sister. Wish I had a sister.
Great block! I only seem to look like someone else's cousin! pjrquilter (at) mwn (dot) com
I have been told that I look like a good friend of someone's but have never seen her. People do say that you do have a twin - somewhere.I love your block and it is so nice, indeed, to make the cover. Good for you.

I am always being asked if I am someone else. I guess I have one of those faces. The one that stands out was at the airport a lady told me I looked like a newscaster on CNN!! And I didn't even know who she was talking about ;-)
Congratulations on your CoverGirl Status. Lauren Hutton...
welllll, when I was MUCH younger and MUCH thinner I was occasionally told I look like Cher :)
I love your block and the colors you used. I' ve been told I look like my Mom and act like her too, which is alright in my book because she is the most awesome Mom that anyone could ask for.
I've never been told I look like anyone, not even my parents. My dad used to get asked for his autograph by people who thought he was the runner Seb Coe.

Your block is adorable!
I saw Joanna Figueroa (Fig Tree) in her booth at PIQF a couple of years ago and was so geeked out that I completely embarrassed myself. LOL! She was such a good sport about taking pictures with me.
Thanks for the opportunity to win!

I've never been told I look like anyone!
I have not found my doppleganger yet but I will keep looking
I've never been mistaken for anyone else before. Thanks for the opportunity.
chocolatewiskers@aol.com
I was told, back in the late '80s that I looked like Stefanie Powers. I think it was the BIG hair.
Wow, generous giveaway and fun fabrics!
When I was substitute teaching, I had a teenager tell me I looked like Nelly Furtado! My sister-in-law saw a picture of me before she met me, and wondered if I was Latin. I love to sing and I speak Spanish as my second language, so both were flattering!
reillyr2(at)hotmail(dot)com
You are a funny one! Your block is really cute too. Before I'd invest in a new mat, maybe some new blades woukd be better. 😀 i have no lookalike, but some people have called me Hope before...guess I look like one of their kind friends. Hugs, Karen
Apparently I resemble a teacher at my children's school. I've had kids come up and say 'hi Mrs. So-and-So', and I like to ask if they've finished their homework! One of the teachers even mistook me for the other teacher once!
I am asked frequently if I am someone's cousin. I have never been who they think I am.
I don't think I have a famous doppelgänger, but strangers swear they know me all the time-so apparently God used this human model number a lot! :) thanks for the fun giveaway!
Apparently there is a school teacher in the area that I look like, but I never met her.
auntie.clark@gmail.com
I've been told by many that I look like my mother. It's a real compliment since she is the energizer bunny that never seems to run out of energy. kthurn@bektel.com
I don't think I have a doppelganger other than my sisters and my daughter. Does that count? Love the block!
Well, I have never been told I look like anyone (other than my mother!), and I haven't met any real quilt celebrities, so...pick me anyway? :)
I get stopped by people thinking I am my sister! Congrats for making the cover!
nikilsend(at)outlook(dot)com
More than a few times I have been told I look like the actress Meredith Bernie-Baxter! lol thanks!
I don't have a doppelganger that I know of, but I was once told that I belonged in a pre-raphaelite painting
I have been told by 3 different people that I look like someone they know. Great block and I love your tablerunner.
Seems I only look like me. Only funny story of quilting celeb - my daughter thought I was a bit loopy when I got excited having my pic taken with Alex Anderson at the IQF in Houston.
I've never been told that I look like anyone, but my husband has been told he looks like Pat Sajak. I actually think some of his mannerisms remind me of Pat, too!
When my mom's husband was in his last days of Alzheimers, I was with him in the hospital room when Wheel of Fortune came on. When Pat Sajak came on stage, he said, "I didn't know Tom was on TV." (Tom is my husband who looked like Pat to my mom's husband that night.) So interesting.
I have never been told that I look like someone ... I wonder if you look like someone do you share the same talents?
I used to teach preschool and when Top Gun came out the kids kept telling me I look like Meg Ryan. I LOVE four year olds! :)
My favourite block today!
I don't think I look like anyone except my mum!
No funny stories, but a dew years back as I was turning grey, I cut my hair quite short. Many of my friends told me I looked like Demi Moore - she had almost the same haircut then! Too bad Ashton Kucher didn't come with the hair cut!
I love your cute table runner and block design in happy colors! I like reading your posts and fun comments! I look like my Mom and daughter :)
I look like a female Barney Fife. Not sure I spelled that right but he was the deputy on the Adny Griffen show. I think it's the nose. Lol!
Your block looks so fun in a table runner. Nice work!
Someone told me I looked like Jamie Lee Curtis once....I think it's quite a streeeeetch!
Thank you for joining in with another block. I love seeing them!
my doppleganger is Marsha Mason.... (The Goodbye Girl)
Nice block. But I do not look like anyone but me.
My doppleganger is obviously slacking and not famous, so *I* have to do all the work for fame & glory...someday, someone will name ME *grin* (let me dream!) Congrats on the cover....cool kid!
Oh, lordy, this takes me back. In high school there was a girl named Marie, and we looked alike enough to be twins. One night I went to the local ice cream stand and the guy serving me insisted I was Marie. He refused to believe I wasn't her! He actually argued with me about it.
I have never been told I look like someone else and I've never been mistaken for anyone else. Boring! But I love your block and look forward to making it. kathleendotlutzatcomcastdotnet
I don't look like anyone other than myself and I took a class with Eleanor Burns but nothing exciting happened other than learning how to make a great quilt top. :(
Apparently I look like a receptionist at one of the clinics near by :)I wish I looked like Sandra Bullock though!!
I've never been told that I look like anyone famous. Really like your block. Thanks.
